Why is it called chronic pain? This is to differentiate the two basic types of pain, based upon the duration. Acute pain is pain that lasts less than three months while chronic pain is pain that lasts for over three months. You may feel the pain all the time or it may come and go. It can happen anywhere in your body and has countless causes.
Chronic pain is very common and a common reason why people seek care at our office. According to a 2021 study from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) it found that an estimated 20.9% of U.S. adults, about 51.6 million people, experience chronic pain. You may be wondering why this is happening. Well, pain is your body’s way of telling you that something’s wrong, like an alarm or a warning light in your car. When that alarm continues to go off for months or years, it can be extremely frustrating, even depressing, taking the desire and joy out of life. This can be quite damaging to your physical, mental, and emotional health.
It’s so important to seek help for chronic pain and not let it take over your life. There are so many ways that we help chronic pain. The first step is to find out why this is happening, what we call finding the root cause of the problem.
If you have chronic pain, you should be seen by a doctor trained and experienced in understanding the complexities of chronic pain brain health, functional neurology, and cognitive issues that occur with chronic pain.
